We Make Driving More Fun

We love the accessibility and fun involved with golf carts - we have just as much fun building golf carts as we do driving them! We look forward to meeting the needs of our customers with professionally-crafted, completely street-legal vehicles.

What does it mean to make a cart street-legal?

When you convert a golf cart to a street-legal cart, it goes from being called a “golf cart” to being a federally licensed low speed vehicle (LSV). Anyone can add the necessary safety items to their cart, but the last step of assigning it a VIN has to be done by a federally authorized LSV manufacturer. We have established QC Cart Craft, LLC as an approved manufacturer of LSVs.

There are many safety and legal requirements involved with making golf carts street-legal. We make sure to cover all of these requirements; some of the primary safety features include:

  • DOT approved windshield with a wiper
  • DOT approved tires
  • Seatbelts for every seat on the cart
  • Proper lighting, including headlights, brake lamps and turn signals
  • Side mirrors and a high-mount rear view mirror
  • Speedometer
  • Top speed between 20 MPH and 25 MPH

We're experienced in all aspects of building street-legal golf carts, so rest assured you'll have all your bases covered when you work with us.

The origins of QC Cart Craft

This all started because in our neighborhood, there is a public pool that we are members of. We are too far to walk, but not far enough to justify driving a car. I wanted a golf cart…though the wife did not. Finally I talked her into it. I looked around on all the regular outlets: Craigslist, Facebook marketplace and many others, but couldn’t find what I wanted. So I bought a cheap cart that I knew I was going to tear down and rebuild the way I wanted, to serve the purpose we needed.

I did not need our cart to be street legal to get back and forth to the pool. I “needed“ my cart to be street legal so that I could drive it virtually anywhere I wanted with confidence, using any of the city streets with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less (that pretty much describes 95% of the roads in Charlotte). It had to be functional, so that we could use it around the house to do yard work, move mulch, move plants around, etc. But it also had to be fun - I still wanted a fun way to get back and forth to the pool. At the time of completing my first golf cart, we had a 1-year-old boy. I would take him on very short rides near the house and some of his first words were “golf cart ride”. He loved it, I loved it, the dog loves it. My wife tolerates it, but she has come around to enjoy taking it to run errands, and out to dinner, when the weather is nice.

More about our owner and founder

My name is Christopher English. I am a mechanical engineer that has built and worked on cars since the age of 16. My love of golf carts, has me currently converting a modernized 1929 Chevrolet Tudor sedan into a fully battery powered electric car. This project is taking my knowledge of electric vehicles and systems to a higher level.

We are ready to help make the streets of Charlotte more fun and more accessible. Whether it be fixing up an existing golf cart or creating a new one from scratch, we're ready to take on any challenge you throw at us. We look forward to working with you!
